Ralph Northam, the governor of Virginia, has had a bit of controversy lately. He apparently dressed in blackface or a KKK costume-though on his second press conference he said it wasn't him in either costume.. He has a history with questionable choices though, and apparently he dressed in blackface as Michael Jackson.
We've all done stupid things before that we don't the world knowing, but if you go into politics, you give up the right to say "Hey, don't talk about that, I was young and stupid." Is it unfair? You bet. Is it how the world works now? You bet.
Virginia is a purple state, but it's relatively safe for the democrats. If the state swung to the right or was reliably red, the democratic caucus in the state house would not be calling for his resignation, and you are profoundly naive if you think otherwise. Yes, of course if the parities were reversed you could say the same thing about the republicans. It's how politics works, sadly.
