More thoughts on vigilante justice

That piece of human garbage, "Dr" Larry Nassar is being sent away to life and frankly, that's too good for him. He needs to get the death penalty. At the sentence hearing the father of one of the victims jumped the bench and tried to attack Nassar. Like everyone else I cheer the father and I'd pay his legal fees but the judge correctly decided not to hold the man in contempt of court and let him off totally free. Thank God.

Of course, I saw people posting about how they'd do the same thing. I applaud them to one degree-it's nice to see people paying attention to the news and defending innocent children, but I'd like warn them too. Taking vigilante action against people, even disgusting people, has it's drawbacks. Lets say you bring a gun to the courthouse, sneak it past security and decide to open fire in the courtroom. You are real proud of yourself because you killed a monster, but a stray bullet hit the court reporter and she's now dead. You might say that it's no big deal, after all your intentions were noble but instead you killed an innocent person and I'm not sure that the courts will look at it the same way you will. You will be brought up on manslaughter charges and probably sent to jail for 20 years.

The other thing that bothers me greatly is just saying what I just said-that playing Punisher isn't a good idea-will be taken the wrong way by stupid people, who will think that I'm somehow condemning the father or defending a monster like Nassar. It saddens me to think that people can't figure out that me saying "vigilante justice has it's drawbacks and isn't a good idea" is the same as "supporting a son of perdition who deserves the death penalty." Welcome to the internet, I guess.

Do you worry?

The USA Today is not known for it's hard hitting journalism or interesting stories, but they did have a fascinating piece yesterday. Apparently everyone is worried and exhausted, and like the headline says it's not just you. I find this story very weird and I wonder if our ancestors felt as worried about the world as we do. After all, they had to fight in two World Wars in under a century so whatever our problems might be, they are nothing compared to what that generation went though.

As a rule, we have more free time than our ancestors did. Our ancestors worked much more hours doing much more physical labor. For the most part they would be shocked to see how much time we watch TV, play golf, go online and spend with our children. Perhaps they were too busy to be frightened of the world around them-if you have extra free time and nothing to do it would be easy to fill your time with worrying about things.

One of the reasons we are so frightened today is how we get our news. 50 years ago (shockingly, that was 1968, not 1930) you could get the news from your newspaper or your radio-there was not unlimited options for news. I'm not complaining about this, I love the news, but to some people could feel overwhelming. Most people I fear will do the opposite extreme-they'll click out and never be in touch with the world around them. That's just as bad as never taking a break.

The system has failed

No, it's not about the amazing Megadeth song. It's about the school shooting. Have you paid attention to this story? For a story that you thought could not get worse, it's getting worse the more we hear about it.

We know that the majority of the blame is solely on the shoulders of the psychopath who pulled the trigger. Not the gun, not the sheriff, not the students, not the administration-we get it. But the red flags were all over the place with this guy. The bullying is disturbing. In 2018 with a lot of attention paid on bullying and it's effects on children, it's troubling that no one put a stop to it and placed the kid in counseling. More importantly, why didn't the bullying stop? That's strike one against the system.

Strike two is how the government apparently ignored many tips about the deeply disturbing behavior of the kid. The FBI didn't care. Neither did the local police. If you see something, say something, but let's be honest. Everyone saw something, many people said something, and no one cared.

We can talk about the sheriff being a self promoting fool. We can talk about the deputy who resigned due to his own cowardice. Apparently cowardice wasn't limited to one deputy. According to one report, multiple cops didn't bother to enter the school until more students were killed. But all that talk is meaningless at this point.

The system has failed, and it has nothing to do with gun control.

Scripture Sunday Moroni 7:11

You've probably heard the phrase "You can't serve two masters". I know I have. This passage makes me think of that phrase. It also makes me think of the old computer programmer phrase from the 1980's "Garbage in, garbage out." It's true, a bitter fountain can't bring forth good water and a good fountain can't bring forth bitter water. That's an oversimplification of course-a good man can act in a way that isn't good and a bad man can behave correctly. Like the great song by Everlast says, "Seen a rich man beg, seen a good man sin and heard on honest man lie".

A man being a servant of the Devil cannot follow Christ, it's impossible. Since both Christ and the Devil have vastly different interests and different methods-the two will collide. The entire point of this life, if you are a Christian, is to find out to follow Christ and not to follow the Devil. While the roads may be murky sometimes and all the choices are sometimes not as black and white-if you have a solid background it makes it easier to find the right choice.

The heart attack grill?

So, I'm a bit late to the party in this but I guess there is a legit restaurant that serves deadly and delicious food called "The Heart Attack Grill" somewhere in Arizona. The waitresses dress up in nurse costumes and the owner parades around in a doctors uniform. The food looks genuinely horrible to eat and if you choose to eat there, you'll probably get deathly ill. In other words, it's a trashy gimmick used to attract sad and somewhat pathetic people who don't care about their health.

And guess what? It should be perfectly legal. Sure it's a strip club for food-desinged to make you feel good for ten minutes than lonely, sad, ashamed and depressed afterwards-though in a strip club, you probably won't die of a heart attack. In this case, it's highly probable-but if you choose to do that to your body, it should be totally legal.

Again, I'm late to the party on this one and I guess it's been in existence for a decade or so, maybe even longer. Life is largely about freedom and choice, and if this is your thing and you are willing to accept the consequences, knock yourself out.

Album of the weekend

Black Veil Brides-Set the World on Fire

Okay, my sixteen year old goth self would have loved this band and I admit that for a grown man it's strange, but this album is in my collection and it is a huge guilty pleasure. A large part of the album has a retro 1980's feeling-like the hair band combined with a more harder sounding metal for a few of their songs. That's actually one of the issues I have with this album-it can't decide if it wants to be Poison from the 1980s' or a speed metal band from a decade and a half later.

You don't have to download the entire album, in fact you should only download "Fallen Angels", "The Legacy' and "Die for You". The rest of the album you should Youtube first and then decide if you want to spend money on it. Don't worry-I won't tell anyone that you like those songs if you keep my secret safe as well.

Wearing saggy pants to become illegal?

And in the "are you kidding me?" section of the newspaper, South Carolina is thinking of banning "saggy pants". First off yes, I know this will never pass and it's all a publicity stunt, but it still bothers me. Apparently the people in South Carolina have no problem with their representatives waisting time and tax money debating idiotic bills like this.

No, I'm not a fan of the style, but you and I don't make the rules. If you want to make this illegal, what is next? Wearing metal t shirts? Bikinis? Showing your shoulders? The slippery slope argument applies to many things and it's valid. If you give a mouse a cookie, he'll ask for a drink of milk. If you the government an inch, they'll take a mile.

The unpleasant truth about living in a free country is that people will do things that you don't personally agree with or like. You don't have to like it. You don't even have to accept it. You can speak out against it, jump up and down, and elect people who agree with you-but what you can not try to use is government force to stop people from doing things that, while unfashionable and stupid looking, are harmless.

Reverend Billy Graham

Tragically and heroically, a great solider of Christ has been called home.

Reverend Billy Graham was one of the greatest Christians American has ever had. The gates of heaven open up for many of us, but Reverend Graham has one of the very few express passes. Virtually no one has brought more souls to Christ than Reverend Graham. He is no televangelist who sought out fame and money while screwing hookers in cheap motels. Reverend Graham was purely authentic-he practiced what he preached.

Reverend Graham walked with Martin Luther King Junior and spoke out against discrimination. He was very active in the civil rights movement. Yet he was not political. He was good friends with Lyndon Johnson (a democrat) and George HW Bush (A republican).

When someone dies we often say "there will never be another one like him." In this case, it is true. America lost greatly today, but Heaven gained an angel.

Gay teacher fired by Catholic school...

Shockingly, people are surprised by this but a gay teacher was fired from a Catholic school after she got married to her girlfriend. Just to make it clear-I'm in favor of gay marriage, so her marriage doesn't bother me in the slightest. I hope it lasts 50 years. But the church has every right to fire her for not living up to their standards. The school is a private institution and should be allowed to do what they damn well please. The other thing is that if you agree to teach at a private school instead of a public one-you should be smart enough to know you have to play by their rules.

Some good questions to ask though-would the school fire her if she divorced and remarried in a heterosexual union? What if she was a member of the Masons or a group whose teachings is in contradiction to what the church teaches? If she would have, then great-the church is consistent. But she wouldn't have, probably. I went to Catholic school and I can think of two teachers who were divorced and remarried, and one who was a Mason. I can also think of teachers who we thought were doing other immoral activities as well.

The real moral is a tragic one. If you are going to break the rules, don't get caught.  And some sins are more taboo than others, clearly.

Shut up and dribble

I've never been overly impressed with Laura Ingraham, the right wing pundit who has her own radio show and Fox news show. She got herself attention in the early 2000's by telling left leaning celebrities to "shut up and sing". It cost the Dixie Chicks severely in their fanbase and to some degree, their career need really got back on track. No, I don't listen to them but it seems like they've never regained the popularity they had after that controversy. Laura Ingraham is up to it again, this time telling Lebron James to "Shut up and dribble."

The only person who needs to rethink what they are saying is Ms. Ingraham. Maybe she's trying to score points for her side (she is) maybe she's trying to solidify her position on the right as a slightly more polite Ann Coulter (she is) or maybe she just wants attention (she does) but she should have grown out of telling people to "shut up" in 5th grade. Telling someone to "shut up" instead of debating what they say is only done when you don't have a comeback to what the argument and want to throw a temper tantrum. Yes, the left does it too.

Agree with what he says or not, LeBron James has every right to say whatever he wants, whenever he wants. In fact, telling him to "shut up and dribble" just shows that Ms. Ingraham has nothing interesting to say in response to whatever LeBron said.

Scripture Sunday Moses 7:28-41

With the latest news in the world about another school shooting,we often wonder why God allows this to happen. Logically it is, of course, easy to say that He allows evil to happen for perhaps the short term, but there is no peace and tranquility in that belief. I often wonder what He feels like when such a horror is committed, and I think this scripture really shows how he feels.

In the beginning after seeing God weep Enoch asks, "How is it that the Heavens weep, and shed forth tears as rain upon the Mountains?"God eventually answers, "And unto they brethren have I said, and also given commandment that they should love one another, and that they should choose me, their Father, but behold, they are without affection, and they hate their own blood."

Like us, hatred of our fellow man makes Him weep as well. My prayers are with all victims of mass shootings at this time.

The latest mass shooting

Words fail when trying to talk about school shootings. You can talk about the innocent lives that were  taken, but nothing you say will come close to describing the agony that these people went though. You could talk about the motives of the shooter, but nothing you say can properly describe the piece of human garbage that he is. You can talk about both sides jumping into the gun control debate, but let's be honest-no one will change their minds and yes, it's in bad taste to start preaching about gun restrictions and the second amendment the day after a mass shooting. I've been guilty of it too, so mea culpa.

"Thoughts and prayers" may not help the victims, but neither does caustically sneering at the people offering them. At a time where everyone feels powerless, offering thoughts and prayers might be the best thing we can do.

Album of the Weekend

Smashing Pumpkins -Siamese Dream

Is it just me, or the Smashing Pumpkins have such a unique sound that you think people either love them or hate them? I'm a big fan and this album is another one of my personal favorites (yes, I have many favorites) but from what I've seen online people really don't like them. Perhaps like the Grateful Dead, it's a cult taste that not everyone has.

This album isn't as good as their double album classic, "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness", but it's still good if you overall like the sound of the Smashing Pumpkins. It's hard to classify them-are they rock? Are they metal? They have the sound of both styles, but it's certainly best to qualify them as "alternative"-a mix of both genres. I recommend this a lot, because everyone has a different music taste, but yes, you might want to listen to a few of these songs on Youtube before you purchase the entire album.

2018 in retail

2018 will be a fascinating year in retail. While it's true, the last few years haven't been wonderful for traditional retail stores this year might be "the year" that many of them close. I don't want to sound like I'm creating a self fulfilling prophecy. After all, if you wake up every day and say "today I will die" eventually you'll be correct, but one does not need a crystal ball to see that the end is near for stores like Sears, JC Penny, Barnes and Nobles, The Gap, and perhaps every other store that is in an old school mall.

What's sad is that thousands of people will lose their jobs. There is nothing we can do about that, but assuredly people will get other jobs in non retail fields. The government can't save retail, it's beyond their control in a free market. The consumers have decided that Amazon is where we'd rather shop and that's totally understandable. There are no lines, no traffic and no annoying sales people to deal with on Amazon. Amazon isn't the only place to shop online of course, but it is the most popular online destination for shopping.

I've always been fascinated in seeing things decline and fade away. On Youtube I watch dozens of videos of dead malls. Rarely do malls/retail stores go out with a band. It's usually a long, slow bleed until someone mercifully pulls the plug. 2018 could be the year that many stores go the euthanasia route.

Just say no...but you have to say yes in the name of "inclusion"

In another win for professional education and inclusion, girls at a school dance in Utah are being told that they can't say "No" to a boy who asks them for a dance. In the height of the "me too" sexual assault controversies, I, like the mom who is quoted, thought this story was fake news. It is not.

Where do you start with this? Look, no boy wants to be shot down by a girl in 6th grade when asking for a dance. I can tell you that every man alive has been told "no" before by a girl at this age, and while it's embarrassing and awkward it's not fatal. It toughens you up and you realize that you have to move on. It's an important life lesson for a man to learn.

For a girl, it's an even more important lesson to learn. When you tell someone "no" in sixth grade, it makes it easier to tell someone "no" in 12th grade and at age 25. It will empower a girl and begin to teach her the power of the word "no". Like I mentioned before-it's the middle of the "me too" movement, telling girls they can't say "no" is an outrage and absolutely out of control.

This is the worst decision by a school I've seen in a long, long time.

Donald Trump Jr's wife and tolerant people

The wife of Donald Trump Jr has been hospitalized because of sniffing some white powder that was sent to her in the mail. The tolerant set is going crazy over this, and if you wanted to you can search Twitter and Facebook for some truly horrible things that they are saying. Of course-they'll say that the right does the same thing when and if Obama or the children of a prominent liberal have something like this happen to him, and of course they are correct. That doesn't make it right though.

I don't expect decent manners from any side on politics, and if you do you are very naive. I also don't expect the rabid right wingers to suddenly be on their best behavior just because they point out that the tolerant set is so hateful. So why am I even bothering to write about this? Just to point out that the tolerant set is only tolerant when you agree with them, and thus the meaning of "tolerance" is rather murky.

And for the record, regardless of your political views if you wish harm on someone just because you disagree with them politically, you have some stuff to "work on".

Yoga and white supremacy?

Um, I can't believe this is a real story but apparently a professor with too much time on her hands thinks that practicing Yoga is a form of "white supremacy".

If you are so inclined, you could probably make a conspiracy theory sound so good that anyone would believe it. Also, if you want attention and want to make your name in academia, you could probably make anything sound racist. This is interesting though-Yoga isn't really practiced much in Trump country. It's much more of a city thing. The average Trump voter isn't sipping lattes at Starbucks on their way to Yoga class. No, they are too busy working and taking care of their families. Yes, people in cities do that too-but can you picture a truck driver doing Yoga at rest stop in Kansas?

So will the urban elites stop doing Yoga because it promotes white supremacy? I doubt it, but it'll sure be interesting to talk about over dinner at the Four Seasons.

Scripture Sunday Moroni 6:3

One of the foundations of all Christian churches is baptism, and while I've talked about it several times it's always an interesting topic to me. In order to be properly saved, virtually all Christian churches think you need to have some form of baptism. While some churches practice infant baptism, I'm not sure that a newborn baby can make the determination to serve Christ into the end.

For the LDS church, we believe that Baptism is many things, but like this passage says it's also taking the name of Christ upon yourself and having a desire to do your best to be a witness until the end of time of His mercy and grace. That's one reason I support adult baptism, even though little kids in the LDS church do get baptized. You need to be able to be make the choice freely and by your own volition.

Celebrations after your team wins

I love sports, so I understand totally how someone would be excited after your team wins a championship. I also understand that riots have been going on for years after your team wins, so I'm several decades late, but for the life of me I'll never understand how we went from having a few extra beers with your friends to lighting fires and throwing bricks through buildings. Never in my life have I felt the desire to destroy things when I'm happy that my team won.

Oh sure, it's the 5% that are ruining it for the 95%, but that doesn't excuse the actions of the small minority. These people are destroying businesses and homes where their friends and neighbors work. It reminds me of people who riot for social justice then scream about life being unfair when their grandmothers cars gets destroyed or their brothers home gets broken into.

Album of the Weekend

Anvil-Pounding the Pavement

So, thanks to Pledge Music I finally got a chance to listen to the latest album from Anvil. It's called "Pounding the Pavement", keeping with the tradition of the having the first word and the last word start with the same letter. With Anvil-a band that's been on the scene for more than 40 years-you know what you are getting. They've had some bad albums throughout their career (even some I don't like, and I'm a huge fan) but this album is a far from it. If this is their swan song (which I hope it isn't) they've gone out with a good album.

Anvil is a band that goes with what works, they aren't going to change their style or lyrical content. The biggest critique of Anvil has been their lyrical content, and that has some justification. Their lyrics and song content can sometimes be simplistic and a little silly. This album does suffer from that so if you prefer Megadeth or Iron Maiden lyrics Anvil is probably not for you. However the music is superb-it's pure, simple and fantastic metal.

The nanny state protecting us from those eating Tide Pods...

Okay, so we've all heard about the Tide Pod eating challenge, and now big nanny government has come to the rescue, by forcing Tide to change the look of their pods to make them "less edible".

If your kid is over age seven and is so stupid that he has to be told not to eat laundry detergent, it's not Tides fault. It's not the schools fault. It is your own fault, along with the kid maybe. Unless the kid has a legit, cognitive disability then you have failed somewhere along the road of parenthood.

This goes to show a bigger issue. The nanny state takes a problem and punishes the people who aren't responsible in the first place. Also, if Tide is forced by state law to change the color of it's detergent, it'll effect their business and their bottom line. Tide didn't request this. They didn't tell people to eat their detergent.

It's currently being debated in the New York statehouse but I'm confident it'll be coming to a statehouse near you.

Lottery winner wishes to remain anonymous

A NH winner of the lottery wishes to remain anonymous because she doesn't want the publicity that comes with winning the lottery.  I have very little sympathy for her-after all if you don't want the publicity that comes with winning, then you shouldn't have played the lottery in the first place.

However, she does have a point. Going public after you win the lottery is a horrible idea because it immediately puts a huge bullseye on your back. Friends that you didn't know you had and didn't have will start calling. Cousins you haven't spoken to in years will need bail money. While it's true, the people who actually do are about you won't treat you differently, 99% of people around you will.

The solution? Don't play the lottery. Sure, you probably won't win anyway and this won't become an issue for you-but if it does instant riches don't lead to happiness. While it's true, if your basic bills aren't being paid and your kids can't eat it's hard to be happy and content-after awhile though, money doesn't lead to happiness. You'll just be miserable in a Mercedes instead of a Ford.

Gonzaga kids dressing like LDS missionaries

It's college basketball time, and some kids in Gonzaga are dressing like LDS missionaries during games. Gonzaga has asked them to tone it down a notch. I'm going to blunt here: if your biggest problem is kids dressing like LDS missionaries at a basketball game, then you are not oppressed in any possible way. It's college kids having fun and it's playful fraternity boy razzing. If you think it's bullying, instead of running to Gonzaga administration and demanding the kids stop-why not push back a bit like dressing as a priest or a nun? Gonzaga is Catholic, I think.

It's fun to play victim sometimes. You can break out the social justice snowflake card and say "See, everyone hates LDS. Poor us." Virtually everyone out there from every social, religious and ethnic background can find something to play victim but strong people need to realize that it'll only get you so far. You need to toughen up, take the joke and understand the difference between real persecution and playful teasing-even if the teasing might be in bad taste.

It concerns me how thin skinned everyone is in 2018, and no, it's not just a millennial thing. I know thin skinned baby boomers, Generation Xers, and probably even the greatest generation had their thin skinned people. Being unable to take a joke is a sign of insecurity, demanding attention, or just being a straight up baby.

Should schools be forced to display "In God We Trust?"

A new bill in the Florida state house would force schools to display, "In God We Trust" somewhere on the building. At first, it sounds like relatively harmless idea that everyone can get behind, in particular people who believe in God like myself. I would vote against it though if I was a member of the Florida house of representatives.

First off yes, I know that the constitution does not include anything about separating church and state and yes, I am concerned about the rise of atheism in our culture. However, that doesn't mean that public, tax paying institutions should endorse any religion. I don't want an atheists tax dollars going to this because it violates their civil rights and their right to spend their own money the way they want too. Of course you could say "You idiot, governments always spend money on things that people might object to." Of course they do, but that doesn't make it right, and that doesn't mean we should continue to do that.

Scripture Sunday 2 Nephi 2:6-7

It's a personal crusade of mine to make others understand that LDS believe in Christ. Sure, we might have different beliefs than other mainstream Christian churches but out scriptures are loaded with references to Jesus Christ and how He is the redeemer and the Messiah.  LDS believe that Jesus Christ offered Himself as a sacrifice for sin-just like this passage says. All people who have a "broken heart" and a "contrite spirit" can go to Him for relief and forgiveness.

Children held captive by their parents

You've assuredly heard the story of the California parents caught isolating and abusing their children in California. If you haven't heard of it, here is a link to the story. The story is sickening.

As a younger man I would have volunteered to throw these two parents to the gas chamber, flip the switch and then watch gleefully as they gasp for breath and die. I would have felt no guilt whatsoever for it either-none. Now, I think they are entitled to a fair and objective jury trial. If they are found guilty, then you can execute them and no, I'd feel no guilt if I was the shooter. Some people out there who act like this really do need to die.

It's tempting to go the vigilante justice route here. Believe me, all of us have thought about it. The problem with the vigilante justice is that you and I can't decide who lives and dies. It's not our place. To some degree, it's playing God and if you don't believe in God (nothing wrong with that) it's against the law. If you took the law into your hands and decided to dish out justice no matter how much of a scumbag the person is than yes, you should be prosecuted for murder.

Movies like "A Time to Kill" and "Death Wish" (which is tragically being remade) disturb me. Not just because they are terrible movies but because they glorify vigilante justice. You'll see some pseudo tough guy saying something like "I'd do the same thing-I'd kill someone who looked at my child wrong!" Ask yourself this-do you want someone elses blood on your hands? Killing people might seem like a noble thing to do but in reality, it's not pleasant to have that on your conscience. No matter what you might think.

Album of the Weekend

Motorhead-Bad Magic

This album is very bittersweet for Motorhead fans. Oh sure, it's a great album with the usual snarl of Lemmy widespread through the songs. It has the typical Motorhead sound-which if you like the heavy metal style you will certainly like. Sadly though, it was the last album they released before the death of Lemmy, so even though the album is quite good, it can be a bit depressing listening to it just because you know it's the last one.

As you get older, your vocal chords begin to fade away like every other part of your body. It never bothered me to listen to Lemmy as he aged because to me, he's always had the sound of a guy who believes that Jack Daniels and Marlboro are essential food groups. So to me, this album doesn't sound much different than the other Motorhead albums. As a special treat, this album has a a cover of Sympathy for the Devil-one of my favorite songs of all time.

It's a very good swan song from one of the greatest bands of all time.

Emotional support peacocks

Well just last week I posted that I had a problem with fake support dogs, and now it's coming out that some lady tried to get on a plane with her emotional support peacock. I'll give her points for boldness. I'm certain that virtually no one here has ever heard of an emotional support peacock before.

If it's your thing, fine. If you want to walk around with any kind of animal you'd like, that's your business. If you want an emotional support black bear, that's fine too. It's like a familiar that a mage has in Dungeons and Dragons. The bad news though? Not everyone has to support your emotional problems. Just your pet and family, and even they might have limits. People on a plane shouldn't have to deal with a peacock running around the 747, especially when businesspeople have work to do, moms and dads coming home from vacation have to unwind, and the dude in aisle 7 wants to sleep off his rough weekend in Las Vegas. Your emotional problems are sad, and sometimes they might even be legit-but if your emotional problems don't have the right to effect everyone else.

I've got a little sympathy for this person but I think United did the right thing by taking a stand. I'm sure they'll get the SJW set upset, and I'm sure they'll get sued-but they did the right thing.
