Album of the weekend

Hole-Live Through This

Courtney Love. Just saying her name you are bound to get a reaction. She's like the Ayn Rand of modern music.  This album has achieved widespread critical acclaim and with good reason. It's one of the best grunge  albums ever made, without question. It's one of the best albums of the 90's. Notice a trend?

It was a controversial album for many people when it came out because the style of the the band changed from "riot grrrl punk" to "harmonious grunge". I can one hundred percent assure you that Courtney Love and Hole had the charge of "Sell out!" thrown at them. I don't understand why. The lyrics still deal with everything that the riot grrrl movement cared about. The interpretation of female beauty in pop culture, abuse of women, women's rights-it's a riot grrrl album with a different sound.

Note-riot grrrl was a hardcore underground music movement that combined punk with feminist qualities. Basically some of the greatest music of all time was from this era. It's from the west coast and like everyone else, I think of Bikini Kill when I hear the term.

Love her or hate her, Courtney Love brought the riot grrrl movement into the mainstream. Even if you hate the ideology, you shouldn't hate this album.
