Can you judge art/artists?

The short answer is yes, of course you can. The long answer is yes, of course you can.

If you are an artist of any kind and you can't handle judgements and critiques, you had better find a new job immediately and never complain about it again. That goes for bloggers, tattooists, painters, essayists and basically anyone who has ever produced anything in their life. Aristotle said "The only way to avoid criticism is to do and say nothing."

None of this is to say that your opinion of literature and music will be taken seriously if you really don't know what you are talking about. If you can't stand the paintings of Edgar Degas and think they have no redeeming quality-you better have a good reason or be prepared to not be taken seriously. In other words, judge all you want too, but be prepared to back it up. Saying you don't like something is fine, but be sure to have a reason for it.
