Album of the weekend

Black Sabbath-Paranoid

Some albums are good. Some are iconic. Even while being iconic, good and influential most are not genre-defining and legendary.

Paranoid by Black Sabbath is all of the above. Without it, there would be no heavy metal. No thrash metal. Since punk and metal are first cousins there would probably be no punk either. All of the music I love dearly started with this album. While it's not entirely true that music was all bubblegum before Sabbath (the Stones were pretty dark, actually) a lot of the lyrical content of music was lighthearted and shallow. Sabbath changed that with both the lyrics and sound of this album.

This album was the like the painting "Creation of Adam" by Michelangelo. Before God created man, there was nothing. Before this album, there was no metal. Black Sabbath came by, extended their hand, and created metal.
