A new bill in the Florida state house would force schools to display, "In God We Trust" somewhere on the building. At first, it sounds like relatively harmless idea that everyone can get behind, in particular people who believe in God like myself. I would vote against it though if I was a member of the Florida house of representatives.
First off yes, I know that the constitution does not include anything about separating church and state and yes, I am concerned about the rise of atheism in our culture. However, that doesn't mean that public, tax paying institutions should endorse any religion. I don't want an atheists tax dollars going to this because it violates their civil rights and their right to spend their own money the way they want too. Of course you could say "You idiot, governments always spend money on things that people might object to." Of course they do, but that doesn't make it right, and that doesn't mean we should continue to do that.
It does not matter what we display in any building if it is not part of the heart of our culture. I think we focus too much on buildings and monuments and less time on being christian as a people. More tolerant, more loving, for forgiving. If we, in how we live our lives, show that we trust in God, we won't need buildings to state it.
ReplyDeleteOh for sure. It's just a saying after all-it might be meaningful and it might be true-but in reality, it's just meaningless words to some degree.
