Lottery winner wishes to remain anonymous

A NH winner of the lottery wishes to remain anonymous because she doesn't want the publicity that comes with winning the lottery.  I have very little sympathy for her-after all if you don't want the publicity that comes with winning, then you shouldn't have played the lottery in the first place.

However, she does have a point. Going public after you win the lottery is a horrible idea because it immediately puts a huge bullseye on your back. Friends that you didn't know you had and didn't have will start calling. Cousins you haven't spoken to in years will need bail money. While it's true, the people who actually do are about you won't treat you differently, 99% of people around you will.

The solution? Don't play the lottery. Sure, you probably won't win anyway and this won't become an issue for you-but if it does instant riches don't lead to happiness. While it's true, if your basic bills aren't being paid and your kids can't eat it's hard to be happy and content-after awhile though, money doesn't lead to happiness. You'll just be miserable in a Mercedes instead of a Ford.

  1. The lottery is just a tax on the poor. I always laugh when I hear "the lottery has put x number of people through school"

  2. We could not agree more on that. It's a tax on people who don't understand basic math.
