I don't live in Utah, so I'm not interested in the politics behind their initiative to ban medical marijuana. I'm more interested to see how the official statement and feelings of the church effect LDS voters.
Utah is changing. The mayor of Salt Lake City is an out lesbian. Ask yourself if that would have happened twenty years ago-which was only 1998. Probably not. Sure, while the majority of Utahans are still Mormon, at least nominally, immigration and changing demographics have weakened the influence of the church.
Ireland recently voted overwhelmingly in favor of abortion. Commentators correctly said that it shows how little influence the Catholic church has over Ireland. While Prop 2 is no where near as controversial or impactful as abortion, I'm still eager to see the results of the referendum.
