The first basemen/outfielder for the Baltimore Orioles, Chris Davis, is having a horrible year. He's on track to have some of the worst statistics for a major league player in history. Yes, there are other things to worry about, but my heart breaks for this guy. When you or I fail at our job, it's not public. Granted, we aren't getting paid what he is, but all the money in the world isn't worth this kind of public humiliation.
Just to make it to the majors means you are better baseball player than 99.9% of all other baseball players. Sure, he's much better than we are, but he's better than a lot of other people too. He's struggling right now, and it must be brutal for his teammates, his family, and most important himself. But it's important to remember that one at bat in the majors or one inning pitched means you are an outstanding ballplayer.
My team is the Rays. Not many of us out there but we are the few and the proud. For now though, I'm rooting for Davis to do better.
