This scripture sounds like some very bad things were going on with the latter day Gentiles. In fact, the author talks about murders, whoredoms, secret abominations and the like. I truly wonder what was going on with the "secret abominations" that was so bad it couldn't be mentioned. Was it worse than murder? Worse than whoredoms? Maybe I don't want to know.
The passage ends with the offer that people be baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost so that they may be numbered with the people of Israel. That's a good thing of course, and if you are a baptized believer in God you are held to a higher standard than those who are not baptized. If you are planning to commit murders, whoredoms and "secret abominations" though baptism won't stop you. Baptism is not a special guard against you committing evil things.
