Is Mormonism a cult?

No, Mormonism is not a cult. The term “cult” has a demeaning and dismissive sound. Everyone has heard the accusation that Mormonism is a cult. I’d respond that most cults die with their leaders. Jim Jones/Marshall Applewhite do not have many followers today. The “cult” Joseph Smith Jr started does, it’s close to fifteen million. Cults also sometimes deify of worship their leader. Even though you’ve assuredly heard it, no, LDS do not worship Joseph Smith Jr, nor do we pray to him. Cults tend to be secretive and ignore outsiders. Mormons live and work everywhere. You probably have Mormon friends and don’t know it. We live normal lives and just want to be able to live our faith. The church is impossible not to find. Missionaries teach you about the basics within the first meeting.  That is hardly keeping things secret.
